Sped Up Schedule of Cop Crackdowns on Coral Street Encampment Community

Location Details: Limekiln and Coral St.–meet on Limekiln to cover Coral St., Limekiln, and adjacent streets depending on the police harassment radius.
Those wishing to help the unhoused lodging on Coral St. keep their belongings safe are urged to show up. The group also documents police behavior to deter abusive violence, property destruction, and unlawful arrest–though this seemed to be the heart and soul of what’s happening.
They meet at 7 AM, but those wishing to help can come at any time in the next few hours with cameras, cars, and vehicles to help transport deported residents & their property to safer spots. Earlier is better than later as police in the past have taped off the area and forbidden reintry as early as 8 AM.
In the most recent (7-22) Wednesday morning sweep, cops increased trespassing citations for entering normally public areas of Coral and adjacent streets.. The destructive raids are now increasing in frequency. That sweep caught some residents off guard who were used to thursdays.
This next “clean-up” was unexpectedly scheduled just five days after the last, leaving little time for residents to find new safe havens where they won’t be issued citations.and/or have survivial shelter and property destroyed.
The group needs volunteers and vehicles to help transport belongings, coordinate pickups, and do outreach throughout the week to help file American Disability Act reasonable accommodation requests. These are necessary to require police to provide people with disabilities with the time they need to deal with these traumatic sweeps.
A volunteer reports that one woman who could not move her belongings outside the multi-block sweep zone because she’s healing a spider fracture in her foot was confronted and harassed in a prior sweep.
Volunteers speculate that the purpose of the sweeps is not to cleanup the area, nor provide a “pathway to housing” but rather to increase stress and fear to terrorize survivors into not returning.and “shrinking” the visible homeless population.
I have visited around 10 AM during the last Wednesday sweep. I found SCPD cops harassing, threatening, and ticketing outside residents huddling near their survival gear. This was two streets away from Coral St.

MORE THREATS AND THEN POSTPONEMENT–THE PROCESS IS THE PUNISHMENT
Sidewalk residents at Coral St. told me on a visit earlier this morning that with very little notice (after dawn on the same morning) wrecking crews in trucks drove by to announce the sweep was cancelled.
Presumably postponed, the threatened sweep time (Monday 7-27 8 AM) had been posted on some tents along Coral St. near the Funding Matters poverty-complex entrance on Friday 7-24..
The “just kidding” cancellation announcement was after a number of the residents had packed up. Gathering their tents, clothes, and what they could carry,some of the local refugees either left or prepared to leave under threat of citation, and theft. This “process is the punishment” approach blasted more chaos and pressure into the community. Particularly difficult for those regularly denied water, toilet facilities, and other basic necessities.
STILL STARVING THE HOMELESS OF BASIC SERVICES–
Funding Matter’s April 1st cutoff of access to bathrooms, showers, drinkable water, trash cans, and mail in order to expand its construction and staffing budget.continues four months later, forcing people to bury their shit .
The City/County mask of compassion and shelter Gatekeeper, Jeremy Leonard, was reported on the scene. Of the five residents still there that I spoke with, none reported that they had been offered shelter or housing or even a legal place to move their possessions during the sweep. Restroom access, fresh water, trash cans, even portapotties and wash stations had not been seen there in the five months since Funding Matters cut off the services–perhaps shifting funding to buildings and expanded bureaucracy..
A GRIM FUTURE
The Destruction Schedule may be reverting back to Thursday mornings, though it’s occasionally been Monday or Tuesday, and last week was Wednesday. So in its campaign to drive the visible homeless out of Santa Cruz as part of a city-wide un-welcoming campaign these schedule changes may be intentional moves to create panic, fear, and instability. The main point–the process of continual flight and theft–being the punishment.
The iron fist is backed up by sunny statements from Mayor “Fast Lane” Fred Keeley and faux compassionate cover from shelter bosses Phil Kramer and Evan Morrison. The minimum security-prison-like “shelters” continue to receive funding, but no civil rights guidance from either government or clients.
PHONY CLEAN-UP PRETEXT
Some residents speculated the “clean-up” was simply intended to exhaust, discourage, and depopulate that Coral St. survival sleepers and put them to flight. When I asked why the area seemed odor-free, considering the intentionally withdrawn portapotties,
The primary need, said one of the women, was drinkable water. Funding Matters has, since April 1st and perhaps before, shut off its water access to those outside, perhaps to encourage folks to migrate. Perhaps to provide a more scenic vista for the regular Roaring Camp tourist train which runs by daily.
